One of the many uses for your Spanish knowledge...
Language Learning
You might be surprised, but you can do more with Spanish than just sing crazy songs!
In my class, there are five main ways we will be learning to use the Spanish language. In fact, these five uses of language are what form the basis of the National Standards, which are for world language teachers all over the country.

1: Communication
The most obvious way we use language is to communicate! In class students will be using language to have conversations, share ideas, and practice real situations that would use the language.
2: Cultures
Learning a new language is a way to open windows into a new culture. Students will have the opportunity to see practices and traditions from Spanish-speaking countries, as well as learning how to approach cultural differences in positive ways. They will be able to identify products (items), practices (how they are used), and perspectives (why they are used that way.)
3: Connections
Language is a way to communicate ideas and information, and many of the things students learn in Spanish class connect to what they are learning in other classes. Language skills in particular are reinforced—reading and writing in Spanish helps students improve their English skills as well!
4: Comparisons
One of the ways that students improve their language skills is comparing Spanish and English. Comparing new, unfamiliar cultures with their own can help students understand themselves as well as teaching them to respond to others.
5. Communities
Learning new languages and learning to interact with new cultures is all part of creating strong communities. Building communities is a way that students can be a positive part of their world, and hopefully learning a new language will be only one piece of that.
