I sent home a note with my 6th graders this week about La Misma Luna: Under the Same Moon. This is a movie I show to my 6th through 8th graders, focusing on the story of a young Mexican boy who crosses the border to join his mother. It is a very sweet story, and a good starting point for a lot of good conversations about immigration.
I have been watching this movie with students for years, and I have never had a student who did not enjoy it. (Even the ones who were determined not to enjoy it accidentally got really into it.) I even still enjoy watching it, even after seeing it dozens of times with my classes.
The movie takes place in Mexico and the United States (primarily East L.A.) and is mostly in Spanish (with subtitles) although there are many situations where the characters also speak in English.
The movie is rated PG-13, which is why I do send home notes about it, and the reason I don't show it to my younger classes. There is a small amount of language, and scenes that might be a little intense for younger audiences.
You can find out more about the movie on IMDB, including a parent guide.
If you really loved the movie, you can buy it yourself here (via Amazon.)
